Clark Family - Augusta Co., VA to Washington Co., NC
According to the many lists of census, marriages, tax rolls, tax lists, church members, etc., my long ago family members must have decided to be very anti-social since their names very seldom appear on any of the above documents. Families moving to North Carolina and settling in the Watauga/ Nolachucky areas were usually very independent and many were distrustful of any type of government and were opposed to sharing personal information. Some of my family were definitely shy and reluctant to share and I appreciate the information that has been posted on the internet by persistent genealogy researchers.
There are various reasons these families aren’t found on any early documents. Courthouses were destroyed by fires and records were lost. Old churches have been demolished including their records. Census takers weren’t able to access certain areas and farmers, etc. may not have been home on that particular day. We can only assume our family was in that particular area based on other information.

William II was a Justice of Peace and the Clark’s Creek community was named after him. (From History of Washington County, Tennessee 1988, by the Watauga Association of Genealogists, page 170.)
According to a Rogersville report, when William II was 76 years old and in 1807 he left 300 acres of land to his son Henderson, daughter Ruth and another son William III who all were still living at home and were supposedly the children by his second wife Nancy. I found a few family ged.coms that had their William born in 1780 but I haven’t found any records to support this.
